Buried Treasure Cake
Attention treasure-seekers! Bake a cake with a good-luck coin inside!
Mr. Deebee borrowed this idea from a cake that’s been part of New Year’s Day celebrations in Greece and many other cultures since long ago. Mr. Deebee has a sweet tooth for chocolate, so this is one of his favorite recipes.
What you’ll need:
- 12-ounce can of cola
- 1 box of chocolate cake mix
Topping
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- ½ cup chopped nuts
- ½ cup coconut
Treasure!
- 1 quarter wrapped in tinfoil
Directions
- Ask a treasure-seeker who is an adult to be your assistant baker. Preheat oven to 350˚F. Spray a 9″ x 13″ cake pan with cooking spray.
- In a small bowl, mix chocolate chips, nuts and coconut. Set aside for later.
- In a big bowl, add cola to dry cake mix. (No other ingredients are needed). Mix well.
- Pour mixture into the cake pan. Close your eyes (no peeking!) while your assistant baker pushes the coin into the batter (now its location will be a surprise for you, too).
- Sprinkle chocolate chips, nuts and coconut mixture evenly on top.
- Bake for 35 minutes. Insert a toothpick in the center where there is not a chocolate chip. If there’s no batter on it when you pull it out, the cake is done. Let it cool to room temperature. Slice.
- A super-important reminder: Before serving the cake, make sure your guests know to look for the buried treasure.
- Enjoy—and good luck!
